Corey Jones
Corey Jones was born on February 3rd, 1984. Anita Banks, a single parent, raised Jones along with his two siblings. Jones was raised in the Bible Church of God under the leadership of his grandfather, Bishop S. Banks Sr. It is through the church that Jones skillfully developed his gift as a drummer. Corey matriculated through Palm Beach County schools as a bright and promising student. He graduated from Santaluces High School; where he excelled in academics, track, football, and the marching band.

He pursued higher education at the University of Saint Francis and the University of Akron, OH where he played football. After his mother was diagnosed with cancer, Corey returned home and stood by her side until her untimely death in April of 2006. In 2008 Corey began his professional career as an Inspector Assistant Property Manager for the Delray Beach Housing Authority. He earned several accolades and certifications, including Public Housing Manager and HCV Standard Specialist. Corey was responsible in his vocation and knew how to make his day at work productive and enjoyable.

During his lunch break you could find him practicing the drums at his grandfathers’ church. In addition to his primary employment, Corey invested in other people. He believed in supporting and enhancing individuals from all walks of life. He provided free music lessons to children and adults, participated in community clean-ups and mentored young musicians. Corey was influential as a young leader; organizing church jam sessions, bringing musicians together to create melodies from heaven. He was also a member of Future Prezidens Band. Each band he was part of over the years brought Corey cherished friendship and allowed him to use his gift to touch others.
His memory will eternally personify selflessness, high character, integrity, encouragement, and positive influence. While he has an extensive list of educational, ministerial and professional accomplishments, Corey understood what it meant to appreciate the fun aspects of life. His extracurricular activities included, watching sitcoms, playing video games with family, laughing out loud ("Yaaaaaaaah") and being the ultimate Oakland Raiders fan. He was a talented fun-loving, calm, humble, peaceful natured young man with a promising future ahead of him….as a world renowned drummer.

On October 18th, 2015, Corey Jones, 31, a local church and community musician, was driving home from work in the early hours, when his car broke down at the exit ramp off of I-95 in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. While waiting for a tow truck, then police officer Nouman Raja aggressively approached him in an unmarked vehicle and plainclothes. Within seconds, Raja fired six shots at Jones, striking him three times. After the shooting, Raja falsely claimed to investigators that he identified himself as a police officer and shot Jones in self-defense. Both assertions were disproved by an audio recording of the fatal shooting.
